The king collapsed. One of his men hurried to his side.

“He’s dead!” the man after examining him. “She’s killed him!”

“And let that suffice as a warning,” Vashti’s voice continued from all around them. “You only hear me now, but soon I will be coming to all the corners of Faerie to finish what the great witch began! If you’re wise, you’ll choose your side with care by giving my son the homage that he is due!”

The winds grew to a deafening pitch, sending people screaming in every direction, their depraved celebration at an end.

“Go!” Nia shouted at the now large group. “Back to the camp! Away from the city now!”

Rose didn’t hesitate. Instead, she allowed Aemon to grab her by the hand and drag her forward, away from the city and its darkness, Vashti’s voice echoing behind them as they ran.

As they ran, Aemon and his companions kept their shining silver eyes focused on the hill where they had made their camp. But beneath Rose’s feet were the familiar silver roots. They pointed to the northwest, the direction from which they now ran. And while she had no desire to ever return to the Spring Court, more than ever, Rose found she wished to heed the roses’ call. For this night seemed endless, and Rose wondered if she would ever see light again.
